Frequently Asked Questions
Are you qualified to design structural work for my home?
Yes. I am a Chartered Civil Engineer (CEng MICE) with over 18 years’ experience in structural design, specialising in residential projects including extensions, loft conversions, new builds and many other types of structural alterations.
Do I need structural calculations for removing a wall?
Usually, yes, if the wall is load-bearing. Building Control will normally require structural calculations and support sizing before approving the work.
Can you work from architectural drawings?
Yes. PDF drawings are usually sufficient to provide an initial quotation. Clear, dimensioned drawings help speed things up and help provide a more accurate quotation.
Do you provide architectural drawings or planning applications?
No. I provide structural engineering calculations and structural drawings only.
What type of projects do you specialise in?
I tend to focus on residential structural work such as extensions, loft conversions, new build houses, internal alterations, and structural openings. This allows me to provide a focused, efficient, and reliable service.
Do you take on basement projects?
Basement and below-ground structural design is not a core part of my current workload, as these projects can be significantly more complex and time-intensive for a small practice. However, I do have extensive experience in this area and may consider suitable projects on a case-by-case basis depending on scope and programme.
Do you carry out structural surveys or condition reports?
I provide structural design services only. Structural surveys, defect diagnosis, or condition reports are not included unless specifically agreed in writing as a separate service.
How quickly can you attend our site?
Site visits can typically be arranged within 3-5 working days, depending on availability and current workload.
How long do calculations take?
Typical turnaround is around 5–15 working days, depending on project size and current workload.
Do you deal directly with Building Control?
Calculations and drawings are prepared to support Building Control approval. I will communicate with Building Control if required; however, I do not submit applications, and formal approval is issued by Building Control.
Do you work with my architect or builder?
Yes. I regularly coordinate with architects, builders, and surveyors to keep projects moving smoothly.
Will builders need to contact you during construction?
Occasionally. I remain available for reasonable queries relating to issued structural designs (for example, clarification of details on drawings). Design changes or additional input may require revisions subject to additional fees.
Can you advise on construction methods or temporary works?
The contractor is responsible for construction methods, sequencing, and all temporary works (such as propping or excavation support).
Do you work outside your local area?
Yes, in some cases depending on the type of job and location. Remote projects can also be completed where accurately measured drawings or surveys are available.
Are you insured?
Yes. I carry Professional Indemnity insurance appropriate for the scope of work undertaken.
How quickly do you respond to enquiries?
Typically, within 48 hours on working days. During site visit days or focused design periods, responses may take slightly longer, but you will always receive a reply to an initial enquiry.
